The Stranger in Bangkok finds himself immersed in the realm of Thai spirits

When one thinks about Thai movies, Mr Tony Jaa springing around smashing baddies comes to mind. But the next thing that pops up would probably be the internationally-acclaimed horror flicks like Shutter and more recently The Coffin. My local friend tells me that the reason why Thai horror stories are so real and spine-tingling is because they are created by people who have genuinely embraced the idea of ghosts for many generations.

Which brings me to my point of this post. There's this small exhibition hall (called TCDC) on the top level of the Emporium in Sukhumvit which never fails to mesmerize me. This year, it has held a showcase for Japan's dying art of bamboo weaving, followed by introducing Thai creative design commercial products to the public. This time, it took things up a notch and transformed itself into a creepy spiritual realm.

I brought Li Li and my mom here with a casual mindset. To me, it was supposed be a day of fun at an upscale shopping mall with a walk through the interesting exhibition followed by chilling out at a chic restaurant with some wicked Italian food. However, the organisers really caught us cold. Beyond that sliding door you see above is complete darkness, so dark that I did not dare to step forward. It was like something would appear and scare the crap out of us at any instant. Anyway, with some difficulty, I eventually led the 2 ladies through 2 turns in the darkness before a decent amount of light greeted us again.

The first part of the displays was really ok, perhaps they were warming us up before the real thing came. This was the only section where I could bring myself to snap some pictures.

The exhibition ended with a section with all the mystic Thai spirits, which were so freaky I did not want my camera to have anything to do with them. Imagine a lady's head with flowy long hair and only her internal organs (a flashing beating heart and intestines included) hanging off her neck. Worse thing is, she was floating around in circles in the room, catching people by surprise, resulting in an exhibition littered with shrieks of fright. I attempted to look for this particular's pictures online to put on this post, but I gave up prematurely as the images spooked me out again, sorry guys. Much sympathy is offered to the security guard at the exhibition who was dedicated to follow Kra Sue on her journeys to ensure no one got hurt.

There was really an element of relief when we finally stepped out of the showcase, where we were greeted by a DIY desk, and guess what they were teaching kids to make...

Re-visiting the Grand Palace and celebrating the arrival of a new toy

A quiet 2 weeks on the blog front for me. My wife is here with my mom, who went back to Singapore to celebrate my niece's first month yesterday. I finally have some time to breathe. Wasn't easy trying to juggle working while keeping my mom entertained in a country where she cannot even find 1 TV channel with programmes she could really understand. She resorted to day-after-day of shopping therapy to curb her boredom, but anyway, I hope she enjoyed herself. I am just dropping by to say hi to my dwindling number of readers in case you are wondering what happened to me.

Last Saturday was Chulalongkorn Day (King Rama V of the Anna and the King fame), and I took the opportunity to re-visit the Grand Palace, this time with my mom. Although she would enjoy herself infinitely more bulleting around like a high-speed train in the Ratchaprasong shopping district (where the red shirts proudly occupied for a couple of months a while ago), I think the visit wasn't too shabby as well. On a personal note, I got my company and I a new toy to play with, a mini photo studio! Just the thing I need to take nice pictures of the countless spare parts we sell (without any knowledge of how to set up a real photostudio myself), and I can conveniently use to take any knick-knacks I have too. I am pleased.

The Stranger's first experience of a Cosplay Extravaganza

Sorry my dear niece, a lot of blogging ideas welled up in my mind today after some mental block, so you can only be at the limelight of my blog for a couple of days. It's been too long since I talked about something interesting in Bangkok, I shall do it now before my audience start knocking my door requesting me to change my blog title!

After giving a raving review of Paradise Park, I think I should do Seacon Square some justice. Seacon Square is the mall that has served me well over the past year, being only a short walking distance away from my dwelling. Also, it is currently the 2nd largest mall in Bangkok after CentralWorld (with the burnt-down-but-reopened fame). To give Seacon Square some credit, it's been going strong amidst the immense challenge from Paradise Park just 200m down the road, and over the past months, it has organised event after event in its huge foyer to keep customers interested.

One week, a mall is transformed into a bird park.

This week, it got even more exciting!

COSPLAY FESTA!!

To be honest, I do not have any idea what Cosplay is all about. I only know that there will be people dressing up like Japanese comic book characters and people queueing up to take pictures of them, so I just grabbed my G10 and strutted over to take a look. After walking around experiencing the whole Cosplay excitement, I am proud to say that my theories about Cosplay is largely accurate, however, there were a few revelations:

1. There's an obsession with green hair, what's about green hair anyway? There are so many other colours around!
2. The ladies who were into Cosplay were all young, but not exactly the prettiest.
3. 90% of the dressed-up girls wore braces, what's with the teeth of Thai ladies, all too crooked or are they all so vain and rich? Anyway, I wore braces before too, =).
4. Lastly, despite owning one of the best digital cameras around, I seriously felt like a beggar just now. It doesn't feel good when someone 15 years younger than you is taking pictures using a camera with lenses the length of a bazooka while you are snapping away with the BEST DIGITAL CAMERA IN THE MARKET.

Proof of how small my G10 felt, I was almost embarrassed to take pictures.

Greetings from Uncle in Bangkok

Firstly, I have to apologise that for the past weeks, there has been nothing interesting happening in Bangkok itself for me. After my wedding, it's just been ceaseless amounts of work and mounting problems in the office to take care of. Shilei did make a brief visit to pick my mood up a little, but that's about it. Things will not get much better, as I will soon need to start renovating my new warehouse and welcome my company's peak season all at the same time.

On a personal note, September 2010 had been one of the most happening months in my life. After turning 29 on the 7th with my church guys and Candra by my side, I had back-to-back wedding banquets on the 11th in Singapore and on the 18th in my native Kuching. I think this effectively gives me the title 老公, which sounds unbelievably old in any sense.

However, things just do get better and better don't they? Rather unexpectedly, I officially became an UNCLE (叔叔）on the 29th, when I only expected the arrival of my long-awaited niece early this month. I scoured around on FB and I have not seen any pictures of her online yet, so.... you've seen her here first, thanks to Li Li!

Miss No-name-yet is only 1 day old, she needs a lot of sleep!

I have enough new old-sounding titles on my head all of a sudden, no more please, just for a while yeah? I'm turning 30 soon, just let me savour the last bit of my youth ok?

The Stranger in Bangkok is honoured to have 250 'official' wedding photographers

I have always said that Thailand has been good to me. A year has flown by and I am still relishing every moment of this exotic journey in the Land of Smiles. However, after 2 weeks of joy and jubilation having finally written the full stop to my marathon-like wedding festivities, life has gone into an absolute anti-climax following my return to Bangkok. It has been a bad week at the office, the worst week I have had here in terms of emotional and mental turmoil. Worst thing is, I have a bad feeling that this week will become a 7-day work week, talk about never-ending mental torture......

But it's Friday after all, and I am determined to put the frustrations behind me for an hour while I compile this blog post which continues to recount the steps of my marriage. Planning a wedding banquet in Singapore from Bangkok was like building castles in the air. No matter how novel my ideas were, I knew that with me having only 6 full days in Singapore before my actual wedding day to prepare for it, I had to compromise, compromise, compromise.

I just did not want my wedding dinner to become a monotonous film of march-ins and yam sengs, therefore, I invited all my guests to become my wedding photographers!! It was kind of a 'gamble', but judging from the fun they had and the pictures that came with it, I would not have chosen any other way to involve my guests on my big day. Here's some evidence why this move of mine gave me a load of priceless memories I otherwise would not have witnessed:

It gave me proof that my guests enjoyed the free flow of beer.

Disposable cameras do have limitations, but it resulted in a nice silhouette of the singers.

 I would like to thank the WowWowWed team for gracing my wedding and making this possible for us, and also all my great guests who made the evening so meaningful. Picking up the pieces after 911.....

The first real official Yii family outing -- Bak Kut Teh.

It's been a long week, juggling sleepless nights, meetings, gatherings, family outings and a wedding....

911 is finally over, but I need to brace myself to face another potentially gruelling week to complete my wedding festivities in my native Kuching.

I am in no position to share about the actual 911 yet, as it's such an amazing day, it deserves more than just a slip-short mention. However, what makes it even more memorable is how so many of my friends from different parts of my life got together to make it possible for me even though I am stuck in Bangkok remote-controlling this event most of the time. Which other couple can boast such a wonderfully-crafted wedding when they only came back ard a week before their big day (without the help of a professional wedding planner)?

I shall now recount this fantastic experience by sharing my memories of the week leading to 911, which in a way, was crafted as well by the wedding-organising team as well....

Li Li made it a special birthday for me, inviting a special little guest into the party, though her tiny brain was obviously focused on the yellow creamy mess displayed in front of her.

In return, I worked hard on my hatchday to make her room more interesting. She's nearly 80cm tall now!

Following that, my dear brothers celebrated my bday with me yet again, on this Bachelor's night-turned-Bday KTV session. I had a lot of fun, you guys are the best. 2 Mango bday cakes a day, can u beat that?

The next day, I wore my favourite dragon to cut my hair as short as it has ever been in preparation for the big day.

Last, but definitely not least, after enduring a rock version of 我问天and some ridiculously-bad-tasting organic Jaz beer, my ears were literally blasted into pieces by Gilbert and his band during my real bachelor's night.

As I look back at every step taken for my wedding, the only things I see are a beautiful lady submitting her life into this marriage and the work done by my family and friends to make sure I receive her in the most perfect way possible.

Thanks guys...... your efforts have not gone to waste, and my thank yous will not end...

Paradise Park -- Made in Paradise, Open on Earth (my glimpse of Aum Patcharapa)

I live in the East of Bangkok. It's not the most glamorous nor accessible place in this metropolis, with frequent floods and no BTS (train) station in the vicinity. However, I have always felt blessed that I am within walking distance of the second largest shopping mall in Bangkok (Seacon Square) and another stone's throw away from an old but very 'useful' mall in Seri Centre, where I can find the most delicious street food in a comfortable food court setting.

Every cloud has a silver lining, and my silver lining is that the traditional Seri Centre has just been turned into a classy Paradise Park. It prides itself as the Oasis of Eastern Bangkok, but judging by the looks of it, it will soon become the Oasis of Entire Bangkok.

As my company's bank is situated there, I am one of the few who has witnessed the evolution of Seri Centre into Paradise Park due to my never-ending bank transactions. In a nutshell, the design concept of this new mall is to make it look like a massive indoor garden, with natural sunlight coming in to nourish the abundant greenery in the mall. Whatever I say would not actually do it much justice, so I would let me pictures do the talking. These were taken during the extravagant opening celebration last Saturday, which involved performers from all parts of the world and a documented 1000 (??) celebrities.

How could a party be a party without eye candy for the kids?

The management realised too little emphasis has been placed on the wallpapers in most malls, and therefore aim to put it right. These are just a few shots of the many different designs on show to give a different feel to each area.

I am personally quite proud of this montage, hope you enjoy it.

How could I possibly miss out the many celebrities who graced the event. From young 14-year-old heart stoppers to one of the most popular local female celebrities in the past few years, Aum Patcharapa (click here to see why), I am fortunate to rub shoulders with even more Thai celebrities.

The exhausting day ended with a carnival (machiam Chingay) and a nice bit of fireworks. It's really nice that the management made all this effort just to open a shopping mall with a bang. It certainly underlines the determination to make this project work, though to be honest, it would have been a rousing success anyway without the trouble.

Welcome to Paradise.

Just when I thought I was in Paradise, Li Li pointed to a sign which brought me back to Earth with a loud thud.
