    2. Hi I am flying to bkk in 2 weeks time, nothing to emphasized if I am travelling with family or friends but this time round I am travelling with my 11 months old daughter for a 4D3N trip ! Hearing lots of voices .. ahh not so appropriate to bring along an infant to bkk, polluted, crowded, unsafe city to travel to, etc .. is that true ?? Though I don't think so .. I want some support from locals and I think you are qualified to be the one to advise Hehe

    3. Hello Jess

I actually agree on some points and disagree on others. I have a 3 year old and a 8month old, both born here and growing up here, and I have to say the Thai people love children very very much! They are very forgiving to their behaviour and always smile at them. The heartware for being a kid-friendly city is certainly there.

Now for the hardware. One thing to note is that many restaurants might not have baby chairs or baby chairs good enough for little babies (more for toddlers). The normal streets are not suitable for strollers (I recommend carriers).

The air is not as good as Singapore or some parts of Malaysia, and there are not that many trees, but I think it's still very bearable, compared to other cities like Beijing etc. It's pretty densely populated especially in the tourist areas, but if you are from Singapore or been to Hong Kong you should not find this very unique as well.

If you are bringing your 11 month old along, what I suggest is that you stay in a hotel very very near or even connected to a BTS station and spend more time in the malls. If you do not wish to bring a stroller as Bkk is not too stroller friendly, there are malls which 'rent' out strollers too. One of them in town is Terminal 21 at Asoke BTS station. At the other malls, they might have some too, but not displayed to the public, you may ask at the information counters.

In terms of safety, there are rare cases of pickpockets, I feel that as long as you are not flashy, and keep your valuables properly, Thailand is a very safe place (I've been here for more than 5 years). You are likely to get a lot of help because you have a baby, rather than be in more danger.

      Enjoy your trip.

      Eddie

PS. Be prepared for wet weather if you come in 2 weeks' time.

    1. Hello Jess

It's life as normal actually but of course everyone tries to avoid Bumrungrad Hospital as that's where the first case was found.

Otherwise aside of a few more checks on the entrances of malls and hotels where some guards will remind you to disinfect your hands, everything remains the same.

    1. Hello Jacq

Thanks for reaching out. I think at Khao Yai, everything is very far apart. I think to have a free and easy feel, it's really important to have time, so I think your plan is pretty spot-on!

If you have time you can even throw in a trip to PB Valley or Granmonte Vineyards, they have pretty good dining options there and a view that is not expected in Thailand.

Enjoy your Christmas break, it's a perfect time for Khao Yai.

  5. Hi Eddie,
I'm thinking of hiring a driver and van to pick my family and I from Bkk and to khao yai.

Do you happen to have any recommendation of an experienced guide?

    Thank you!

    1. Hello Lynn

Thanks for reaching out. As far as I know I don't think Khao Yai is a place that is popular for guided tours. Usually people will rent a vehicle and drive there or get a vehicle with a driver, who will usually not act as the guide.

I don't have any contacts for you off hand though, because I live here and have my own transport. Sorry for this.

  6. Hi Eddie,

I have a similar itinerary in mind for my trip to Bangkok and Khao Yai as posted by Jacq. Except that I am exploring renting a car for the airport to Khao Yai transfer plus the stay in Khao Yai.

Would you advise that if we have not driven in Thailand before? Do the road signs have some English words as well? We have driven in Australia before and wonder if it would be sufficient to just rely on Google map or GPS.

Appreciate you time in giving your comments.

    1. Hello Jusmoi

Actually if you are confident and experienced, I feel that driving outside Bangkok will be pretty easy. But driving inside Bangkok is a different animal.

I would say 80 to 90% of the road signs will have English so it should not be a big issue, and GPS should be fine if you are going to places which are already established and identified on the GPS system.

    1. Hello Kim,

      Thanks for reaching out!

I have a post on Singapore food in Bangkok:
      http://strangerinbangkok.blogspot.com/2017/06/singapore-food-in-bangkok-ultimate-list.html

There are a few more Singaporean food options recently like Makan Makan, Baba Thai, but I have not tried them so I cannot comment. If you are a fan of peppery Bak Kut Teh, Song Fa and Old Street have also opened here in Bangkok.

      Cheers!

However one of the ladies is recovering from surgery so they are expected to be resting for the next 2-3 months, it will be good to call them to confirm they are open before making the trip there, the uncle speaks perfect Mandarin.
